Fictitious First Contact In 1994 the film Star Trek: First Contact introduced a new threat to the United Federation of Planets – the Borg collective. The Borg is a cybernetic humanoid species with a single purpose, namely the accumulation of technology, rather than wealth, political expansion or social status. The Borg purpose is achieved through forced assimilation, a process which transforms individuals and technology into Borg humanoids, enhancing – and simultaneously controlling – individual as they become a member of the Borg collective. The Borg considers resistance to be futile – options are simply to assimilate or die. Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the USS Enterprise (Star Trek: Next Generation) encountered the Borg and was assimilated into the collective and transformed into Locutus, a Borg drone. The Borg intended to use Picard as a pawn in order to facilitate the assimilation of Earth quickly and efficiently. Picards assimilation allowed the Borg to acquire his knowledge and experience to gain direct access to Federation technology, systems and controls.
